On Friday at the ASEAN-Australia Special Summit, the Australian Government announced the ASEAN-Australia Digital Trade Standards joint initiative.

The initiative provides a framework for Australia and ASEAN countries to cooperate in developing, adopting and using international standards that promote digital trade and support inclusive economic growth in the region.

Australia and ASEAN countries are committed to ensuring our region can reap the full economic and social benefits of joining the digital economy.

The rapid global spread of digital technology presents major opportunities for governments, consumers and business, particularly Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). These include new digital trading opportunities, jobs, investment and improvements in living standards.

However, the benefits of digitalisation are not always shared equally.  This initiative aims to build regional regulatory consistency in a context of rapid technological diversity and change.  It complements existing ASEAN priorities on the digital economy and builds on Australia and ASEAN’s long history of cooperation to promote regional economic integration.
